Mix and match

Today, I started to paint the top of a piece of furniture. My husband had painted the sides a few months ago. I sanded/prepped. He went to buy the paint he had used. I was half done when I stepped back and saw that the colors didn't match. He forgot what he used, so he bought whatever, and "thought it would be OK." FML

Just a note of hope - Paint tends to lighten in color as it dries. Hopefully that was your problem. … The paint and big box stores can match colors. I had a friend take a whole door to Home Depot to get the color matched. Obviously the old paint can or a small sample is easier…

You shouldn't have waited months between coats. Paint can change colors over time anyway, so even if he had got the exact same color, it still may not have been an exact match because of how long the first coat had been on the furniture.
